Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian
The seat of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro stands in Centro, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the city’s patron.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian is the cathedral of the Catholic Church in Rio de Janeiro and the seat of the Archdiocese. The church is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, patron saint of the city.
It replaced older churches that had served as cathedrals since the Archdiocese was created in 1676. The Portuguese page dates the inauguration to 1979, when it took over from the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The Spanish page places construction between 1964 and 1979, in a wide park in the Centro district, not on the beach.
The cone is a civic landmark on Avenida República do Chile, a short Centro walk from Lapa rather than a separate excursion.
The walk from Lapa to the Cathedral of Saint Sebastian is about 5 minutes on foot. Enter from the park; the cathedra of the archbishops is inside this house, not the older Carmo church.
