Biblioteca Nacional
The Biblioteca Nacional at Cinelândia square holds around 9 million items and is considered by UNESCO the largest library in Latin America and the seventh largest in the world.
The collection began with the Royal Library of Lisbon, whose crates of books were left behind at the docks in the rush of the Portuguese court's move to Brazil and only started arriving in 1810. Prince Regent João founded the Royal National Library once the collection was reassembled; until 1814 only scholars could consult it, and only with royal permission, before access opened to the public.
The institution organized the first library-science courses in Latin America and has led the modernization of library services, including online databases.
