Bonde de Santa Teresa

The Santa Teresa Tram has run between downtown Rio and the hillside neighborhood of Santa Teresa since 1877, making it one of the oldest street railway lines in the world.

What it offers: Heritage tram (bonde) linking Centro to Santa Teresa

Electrified in 1896, it became the oldest electric railway in Latin America and for years the country's only surviving metropolitan tram system; it was designated a national historic monument in 1985. Service was suspended after a 2011 accident and resumed in 2015 with new cars built as replicas of the vintage fleet, running along the same route across the Carioca Aqueduct and up into Santa Teresa.

The Museu do Bonde, near Largo dos Guimarães, displays cars and objects from the line's history.
