Casa da Tia Ciata
This site marks the home of Tia Ciata (1854–1924), a samba pioneer, candomblé priestess, and one of the most influential figures in the birth of Rio's samba.
Initiated into candomblé in Salvador, she settled in Rio de Janeiro and became a leading animator of Afro-Brazilian culture in the city center. Sambistas gathered at her house on Praça Onze, where the first samba ever recorded on disc was created.
In the years after abolition, Tia Ciata became known as a grande dame of Rio's Black communities, opening her doors to pioneering sambistas at a time when the practice was still outlawed.
