Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica

This center carries the name of Hélio Oiticica (1937–1980), a painter, sculptor, and performance artist considered one of the great figures in Brazilian art history.

Oiticica worked to move past the traditional idea of the art object, redefining the viewer as a participant engaged in what he called an experimental exercise of freedom. That thinking took public form in 1967, in his "Declaration of Basic Principles of the New Avant-Garde," published for the Nova Objetividade Brasileira exhibition at MAM-RJ.
