Circo Voador

Circo Voador is an open-sided, tent-roofed concert hall beside the Carioca Aqueduct, filling most weeks with live sets from Brazilian bands.

The venue traces back to a circus tent that local artists raised in Arpoador, on the strip between Ipanema and Copacabana, to show their work. The city later granted the group a permanent home in Lapa, under the aqueduct's arches.

Circo Voador opened in its current form in October 1982. City hall shut it down in 1996 and kept it closed for years afterward; a producer's court case won back the right to reopen, and the building — by then demolished — had to be rebuilt by judicial order. It returned to its original producers and staff in 2004 and now runs independently under the nonprofit Associação Circo Voador.
