Confeitaria Colombo
Confeitaria Colombo has served downtown Rio since 1894 and has been named one of the ten most beautiful cafés in the world.
Portuguese immigrants Joaquim Borges de Meireles and Manuel José Lebrão founded the coffeehouse; between 1912 and 1918 its interior was remade in Art Nouveau style, with towering mirrors shipped from Antwerp framed in carved rosewood. A second floor with a tearoom was added in 1922, lit by a stained-glass skylight.
Its client list has included Chiquinha Gonzaga, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Getúlio Vargas, and Juscelino Kubitschek. It opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 19:30, and Saturdays from 9:00 to 17:30.
