Mosteiro de São Bento
The Mosteiro de São Bento is a Benedictine abbey on its own hill downtown, founded by monks who arrived from Bahia in 1590.
Its Mannerist-style church is a leading example of Portuguese colonial architecture in Brazil. The abbey remains active today alongside the Colégio de São Bento, founded in 1858 and one of the country's most important traditional schools, and the Faculdade de São Bento, whose theology and philosophy courses are affiliated with the Pontifical Atheneum of St. Anselm in Rome.
