Praia de Copacabana e Leme

Praia de Copacabana e Leme is one continuous arc of sand facing the South Atlantic, framed by Avenida Atlântica and counted among the most famous beaches in the world.

Copacabana hosts major sporting and cultural events on the sand, from world beach-soccer and volleyball championships to open-air concerts, and its New Year's Eve fireworks display is one of the largest anywhere, drawing crowds that spill north into Leme. In the days before December 31st, processions honoring Yemaja gather on this stretch of sand as well.

Leme, the beach's northern end, takes its name from a rock formation shaped like a ship's rudder. The Le Méridien hotel opened there in 1975, closed in 2007, and reopened in 2011 as the Windsor Atlântica after a change of ownership.
