Theatro Municipal
The Theatro Municipal is an eclectic-style opera house inspired by Charles Garnier's Paris Opéra, inaugurated on July 14, 1909, overlooking Cinelândia square.
Construction began under mayor Pereira Passos as part of the reurbanization that opened Avenida Central, and finished under his successor, Sousa Aguiar. Names of classic European and Brazilian artists are inscribed on its outer walls, and it stands near the National Library and the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes.
It is not city property despite its name, but belongs to the state of Rio de Janeiro, and maintains its own symphony orchestra, choir, and ballet company for its opera seasons.
