LIESA set Grupo Especial at the Sambódromo on Sunday 7, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February 2027, with the champions’ parade on Saturday 13 February. Série Ouro usually opens the avenue on the Friday and Saturday before. Lapa is a bloco neighborhood: expect street music, closed lanes, and a late city. The Sambódromo is close enough to reach on foot from the studio — about 20 minutes toward Praça Onze / Central — and on parade nights that is often the easier way in, since taxis and buses queue for the same closed streets everyone else does. Confirm blocos and tickets on the day; this page is orientation, not a ticket office.

History

The Sambódromo — officially Passarela Professor Darcy Ribeiro — is Oscar Niemeyer's 1984 purpose-built parade avenue: a 700-metre concrete runway with grandstands for roughly 90,000 people, built so Rio's samba schools could compete somewhere other than closed-off downtown streets. Grupo Especial, the top division, is judged there over consecutive nights each Carnaval — floats, drum sections (baterias) of 200-plus percussionists, and 3,000-plus costumed performers per school, each parading a theme (enredo) worked on for most of a year. The following Saturday brings the Desfile das Campeãs, when the top schools parade again for the crowd rather than the judges.

What to expect

Each school gets roughly 65–75 minutes to cross the runway, so a full Grupo Especial night runs from around 9pm past sunrise. Seating ranges from bleacher grandstands (arquibancadas) to reserved boxes (frisas and camarotes) at very different prices; tickets go through LIESA and authorized resellers, not this page. Expect security lines, bag checks, and a crowd that treats the all-nighter as normal — eat before you go, since options inside are limited and pricey.

From the studio

The Sambódromo sits toward Praça Onze and Central, on the same side of town as the aqueduct — close enough that walking is genuinely on the table (see the exact time below). On parade nights that is often the practical choice: streets around the venue close to cars, buses divert, and taxis and ride-hail queue for the same narrow access points as everyone else. Walking as a group along Avenida Presidente Vargas / Praça Onze, carrying only what you need, is what most Centro-based guests actually do.

While you are in Lapa

Lapa runs its own Carnaval in parallel. Traditional street blocos route through the arches and Centro every year — Mem de Sá fills up, drums start early afternoon, and bars stay open long after the last bloco passes. Exact routes and 2027 dates are published by Riotur and the Blocos de Rua associations in January; we do not guess them here, but staying at the studio already puts you inside that footprint without a taxi.

Stay nearby

For Carnaval, a walk to the Sambódromo beats a taxi stuck behind the same road closures — and a walk home after 4am beats waiting for a surge-priced ride in a crowd of 90,000 people leaving at once. Mural da Lapa puts you in a studio you can reach on foot, in a neighborhood with its own bloco calendar for the days you are not at the parade.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Sambódromo from the studio, really?

About 20 minutes on foot, mostly along Avenida Presidente Vargas toward Praça Onze. It is not a casual stroll, but on parade nights it can be faster than a car.

Do I need a costume to watch the parade?

No — spectators in the grandstands wear whatever they like. Costumes matter if you are parading with a school, a different (paid) experience booked directly with the samba schools.

What nights should I book for Grupo Especial in 2027?

LIESA has set Grupo Especial for Sunday 7, Monday 8, and Tuesday 9 February 2027, with the Desfile das Campeãs on Saturday 13. Confirm ticket sales and any date changes on LIESA's own site before booking flights.

Is it safe to walk back to Lapa after a parade night?

Walk with your group, stay on the main avenues, and keep valuables minimal — the same rules that apply to any very large late-night crowd. Many guests wait for the crowd to thin near dawn rather than fight the peak exit.
